My Personal Experience with the Rohan Aira Jacket
I received the Aira at the end of May, which coincided with our first heatwave of the year. Not really ideal conditions for evaluating a rain jacket. But as is the way in the UK, it wasn’t long before the weather had turned, and testing could begin.
When you pick up this jacket for the first time, the thing that immediately hits you is just how light the Aira is. It’s noticeably lighter than any other waterproof I own and packs down incredibly small. On the fit front: I’m in a small, and it fits perfectly. It’s trim enough to look smart but has room to layer a jumper underneath without feeling stretched.
The colourway I have is a dark grey — more of a dark, slightly teal-tinged graphite — with yellow accents on the toggles and zip. It looks sharp. Genuinely smart enough to wear into town or on a commute, which isn’t something I’d say about most technical hiking shells. The men’s Aira is also available in black with orange accents. The women’s version comes in Amparo Blue or black with pink accents.
The real test came when a yellow warning for strong winds hit the South Coast, and my paddleboarding session was cancelled. I took it as an opportunity. Out in what was a properly unpleasant afternoon, wearing just a t-shirt and jumper beneath the Aira, I never once felt the wind cutting through, and the rain was beading cleanly off the outer shell throughout. Despite those conditions, I didn’t overheat. The breathability clearly works — at low-to-moderate intensity in wet and windy weather, the jacket manages moisture well enough that I stayed comfortable throughout my hike.
The hood excels in the wind. The wired peak holds its shape when the gusts hit, and the three-point adjustment means you can lock it in tightly enough that it stays put. One thing to flag: the side toggles that pull the hood tight around your face sit inside the hood lining, which makes them slightly fiddly to release once cinched down.
Both pockets’ zips sealed perfectly — my phone was in there for the duration of the walk and came out completely dry thanks to the AquaGuard zips.
The other significant test was an early morning hike on the South Downs carrying a 30-litre pack, with a bit of drizzle and a light breeze.
